Final Call for Scotland’s Biggest Start-up Prize - £45k up for Grabs
Aspiring entrepreneurs from universities across Scotland who want £45k to support their business idea have less than two weeks left to submit their applications to the Converge Challenge competition.

The Converge Challenge, run by Heriot-Watt University, gives students and members of staff of any Scottish university the chance to develop the commercial potential of their inventions. By offering business mentorship and training budding entrepreneurs can bring new products and services to market helping Scotland's economy grow and prosper.

The Challenge offers the largest start-up prize in Scotland, providing the winner with £25k cash funding and a further £20k in-kind support from the private sector in the form of mentoring, training and business assistance.

Applicants who are shortlisted will be asked to deliver an elevator pitch, when they will have just 60 seconds to sell their business ideas to the judges. Finalists will be up against the most ambitious and creative thinkers in Scotland.

Olga Kozlova, creator of Converge Challenge, said: “Scotland has a track record of producing some of the world’s best research and teaching resources.

“Converge Challenge is about equipping people with the right skills and support they need to turn their academic research into a successful commercial venture. And we are looking to increase the pool of successful home-grown entrepreneurs.

“We’ve already received applications from across the country and we’d urge any university students and staff who have a business idea to rise to the challenge and put themselves in the running for this prize.”

Adam Brown, founder of Bellrock, based at Strathclyde University, and winner of Converge Challenge 2011, said: “Converge Challenge was a great opportunity to stress-test our business plan and refine our strategy to commercialise Lumen®.

“Since winning, the in-kind support has been extremely useful in preparing Bellrock Technology for spinout and its first customer contracts. The coaching and mentoring support has, in particular, helped to clarify my role in the business and has encouraged me to broaden my responsibilities. I believe that contacts I have made through the competition will prove invaluable to the long-term success of the business. Overall, I would strongly encourage anyone with a new business idea to get involved in this year's competition.”

To take part in Converge Challenge 2012, interested entrepreneurs should complete the application on the Converge Challenge page by 18 May 2012

More exciting news regarding miiCard, one of Par Equity portfolio companies in the attached links from the BBC website and the Scotsman.

Edinburgh-based online identity verification service MiiCard is looking to expand into the US after securing £1.6m in seed funding.

Private equity investors IQ Capital, New Wave Ventures and Par Equity have pumped £1.6 million in second-round funding into Edinburgh-based software firm MiiCard, which has developed a “digital passport” for online shopping.

Hi everyone, we have now set up a new Par Equity organisation profile where we intend to post all future Par Equity news. The use of an organisation profile rather than a group allows us to manage our Kiltr connections more effectively and provide enhanced functionality to the Par Equity connections we link with. Please feel free to connect with our new organisation profile.

Just a quick request to all you Kiltr users out there! I would really appreciate any feedback that you would have on miiCard as we are now starting to roll out the service to a wider group of users.

For those that of you that don’t know about miiCard have a look at our 2 minute video at www.miicard.com/tour.

You can register in just a few minutes at signup.miicard.com. We would really appreciate any feedback that you have sent to either myself or support@miicard.com.

Launching this summer will be a range of websites accepting miiCard – and some very exciting ones too! If you are interested in joining this group please let me know.

Again – I would really appreciate just a few minutes of your time on this.

Thanks!

The Glasshouse proved to be an excellent new venue for Par's investor events. On this occasion we had over 80 people listening to presentations from Larosco and Kiltr, who are two of our existing portfolio companies. Both of these businesses made a good show of the progress they are making in their fields. We also saw a presentation from a firm who demonstrated a new way for musicians to get their material to market. To find our more feel free to connect with me......

Looking good for 2012. After seeing 90 people at our last investor event at SG Hambros (thanks guys) at the end of February, our next venue will be the Glasshouse in Edinburgh. The location is great and the team there have been extremely helpful to deal with. Look forward to seeing our investors at the event. Its not open house. so to find out more about how to become involved with Par, feel free to contact anyone in the Par Equity team....

  • Tripping the light fantastic
AMONG the many new gadgets unveiled at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas was a pair of smartphones able to exchange data using light. These phones, as yet only prototypes from Casio, a Japanese firm, transmit digital signals by varying the intensity of the light given off from their screens. The flickering is so slight that it is imperceptible to the human eye, but the camera on another phone can detect it at a distance of up to ten metres. In an age of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, flashing lights might seem like going back to sending messages with an Aldis lamp. In fact, they are the beginning of a fast and cheap wireless-communication system that some have labelled Li-Fi.
John Dewar 3 months ago, Edinburgh, Scotland

Thanks Paul,

I read your updates with interest but rarely have the time to respond. This one though caught my eye. Is this the same Casio that make watches?
The technology fascinates me but it will need line of sight so how can it be better than WiFi or Bluetooth and how fast can it download/upload ?

John

Paul Atkinson 3 months ago, Edinburgh, Scotland

I believe it is the same Casio. I guess your question of line of site and speed depends on how a space is illuminated and how well it works with reflected as well as direct light - I know the technology has already demonstrated enough bandwidth to run a video over a short distances. This could be a really interesting technology for machine to machine communication where current methods are problematic.

  • miiCard Expands Global Presence
Today, at FinovateEurope in London, will announce the global expansion of support for its ‘digital passport’ to include South Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand. The news further boosts miiCard’s already strong start to the year, which has seen a partnership with credit solutions provider Callcredit and TRUSTe Web Privacy certification. This international reach, combined with strategic partnerships, cements miiCard’s exclusive position as the only Electronic Identity and Verification (eID&V) service to anti-money laundering (AML) standard, globally.

Brilliant to see them doing well, I love the 24 / 96 kHz coming out of my squeezebox but this looks like cracking alternative. Especially as a squeezebox + mods is around the same price.
