You're never too old for a guitar lesson, as I will attest to this evening when I meet my old guitar mentor. Got me thinking about my favourite Scottish guitarists: Can't decide!
Ah hem ( clears throat )...
How could forget! I'm more of shoe-gazer when it comes to guitarists Simon, although I listened to a lot of John Martyn in my moody teens along with the likes of Nick Drake.
I surprisingly first heard of JM when I was still living down south. Was actually in Bristol at the time. Even more surprisingly, I heard a lot of his electric stuff before ever discovering jewels like Bless the Weather and Solid Air. Last time I saw him he was wheeled into the Royal Concert Hall doing an airplane! Sort of sad...
I think One World by John Martyn might be my favourite Scottish LP of all time.
Some live recordings on my website here:
John McGeoch gets my vote.
I mean man listen to this......
Love a bit of Magazine. Great tune.
Great link, Andy. John Wayne at the Renfrew Ferry brings back powerful memories ( Big John ). Funnily, I still love those early electric albums. One World was wonderful ( small hours in the small hours is so atmospheric ), but I also loved Well Kept Secret, Glorious Fool and Grace and Danger ( despite the Phil Collins millstone )
Stage times for this weeks Stag & Dagger festival a 1 day event at several well known venues in Glasgow. Would love to go in the evening if I can get a last minute ticket!!
Gah! About time. Thanks for posting this up!
Waahaay! Just realised the unintentional pun. So proud of my sub-concious.
You going pal?
I surely am! It's always a brilliant day out. Last year's weather was so rotten though that made running between venues less desirable so missed out on a few bands I wanted to see.
Did you catch us last year? You couldn't really miss me, it was 21 degrees and I had a tank top on...
Hahaha! Damnit and I missed that?! Do you go all 'taps aff' when the sun comes out too? You know, Glasgow summer chic? Nope. You guys were one of the ones I missed.
What summer, ha. I'm looking forward to this lot though, Art School at 9pmish
Would love to catch Django Django and Forest Swords but looking unlikely this time round... :^(
Sure they'll both be back up here though so not to worry!
Love this, and I've never seen the full version.
Great find!
I've got it recorded to watch later...
Still don't have broadband in my new flat so I'm going to have to watch it at my Mums :(
I'd invite you to mine but its an awful long way to travel!
The stuff around their advertising model was interesting and how much they will have to grow year on year to make their revenue projections. The popularity of the games apps was good too if not frightening that so many people seem to find entertainment from cartoon animals going to the toilet........
Are they going to sell the user down the river to make these revenue projections though? Probably
One of the We Can Still Picnic bands, POST are on Mojo Magazines office playlist. COOL.
I missed this on Jools Holland on Friday, but I can't wait to hear Paul Buchanan's solo album. The 2 tracks I've heard so far are fantastic. I wonder if we can expect some live dates?
I got a little teary when I first heard this track. Hats <3
It is absolutely fantastic, I love everything by The Blue Nile. I walk by him most nights on my way home but haven't got the guts to say anything, plus I'm sure he doesn't want to get bothered by fans!
I'm sure tapping him on the shoulder and uttering "baby, baby, let's go out, tonight" won't freak him in the slightest ;-)
I'll be sure to post some of my musical musings here soon.
Masterful. Draws you in perfectly. Not a word or note unfelt. Keep going Paul, we will if you will.
Brilliant, didn't know he had went solo, loved the last Blue Nile's last album, love his voice, wonderful export of Scotland
An AMAZING interview with Paul Buchanan. I never ever realised the Blue Nile were in such disarray. A true original, one of a kind. Can't wait to get my handa on the album.
I watched this as liked Blue Nile, loved this performance ... ! :-)
Any Felt Fans here? Lawrence is on 6Music at 2.30pm today. Cue up the wireless folks...
Beauty of a tune.
Met a guy called Grant McLennan today & it made me think of the man himself. Just a King in mirrors....
The We Can Still Picnic Collective have been getting a bit of love from no other than Alex Kapranos from Franz Ferdinand. Check out his favourite track from Casual Sex & order the album online or download it from iTunes
Pretty amazing considering all the money The Beatles have made, their first synchronisation licence (allowing music to be used on Television/FIlm) and at a cost of a whopping $250K!
Wow! That's a helluva lot of money!
Was thinking that it might of cost a bit when watching the episode last night. They got their monies worth with the replay in the closing credits though.
What now? Questions have to be asked as to how serious his bid really was and are the administrators in the realms of fantasy or reality?
Jon Snow's a total badass. True story.
Get in there!!
Attributed to Barack Obama's election win in Signed up to National Field on Friday, had a phone call from their sales team 30 minutes later offering me a free demo :) There's obviously a big push behind it at the moment, has anyone here used it before?
It certainly was a great tool for Obama first time round! Did you take the demo?
It's in the diary Mike, I'll let you know how it goes.
Exactly 35 years ago today (07051977) the Subway Sect played Edinburgh on the White Riot tour, and to quote Davy Henderson from the CD reissue liner notes of What's the Matter Boy,..."things changed forever, baby". Subway Sect begat Fast Product (Scars / Fire Engines) begat Postcard (OJ / JK / Aztecs / Jazzateers / Bluebells) begat Pastels / Primal Scream / JAMC / TFC / Creation / C86, begat Belle & Sebastian begat Franz begat 1990s begat We Can Still Picnic (POST / Casual Sex / Wake the President).... and the beat … goes on....

My mates The Imagineers got the opportunity to play on The Late Show with Craig Ferguson special from Scotland. Amazing
Is that miniature railway the one in Arbroath, I wonder? I'm heading to Arbroath for a wee week's holiday in a fortnight's time and I plan to take my 11 month old son on that very railway!
Amazing, time to put some holidays in for this. My favourite female vocalist of all time. And she's Scottish!
Damn. I'm down south. If Craig aArmstrong shows up for a duet, I slash my wrists! Cocteau-wise, Four-Calendar Café is one of my favourite all time albums.
Four-Calendar Café was the last Cocteau's album I found, but totally agree, their finest and a permanent fixture on my iPod.
Believe it or not, I picked my first CT album ( FCC ) on cd at my local library. Who says libraries aren't cool! ( for lack of a better word )
Had a pal who was a t school with her.
Only actually saw her sing once and that was with Massive Attack in the Barras.
But yeah I agree with Bjorn
My first Cocteau Twins album came courtesy of the local library too! It was a cassette tape though - the library had no CDs at the time... !
