Over 160 members of this group! Would be great to know a little about everyone - how about we answer these three quick questions:
1 - What you do work/business wise
2 - Are you using social media for business and if so are you seeing success?
3 - What would you like to see from this group?
…
Cheers
MikeMore
1 - I work for The BIG Partnership, creating and delivering digital marketing/comms strategies for a number of clients. I'm also the founder of the socialpenguinblog.com
2 - Yes and yes!
3 - The sharing of great info, discussion and opinions.
Hi Mike,
1 - I work as Marketing Co-ordintor for Stirling District Tourism; we look after the management of the National Wallace Monument & Stirling Old Town Jail.
2- Yes (Primarily FB & Twitter but have presences elsewhere) and to a degree Yes. The … organisation's presence on social media is still very much in it's infancy
3 - Information from others on how they use SM in business. I'd also really like to hear from anyone who has had difficulty 'making the sell' of SM to all the members of their business and how they managed (or maybe not) to overcome this. More
Hi Paul, thanks for the answers! Interesting business to be working in. In terms of point 3, this may help -
1. KILTR Community Manager by day, musician and record label director by night.
2. Yes
3. Everybody is different and experiences unique to what they use it for, would love to share experiences with other group members
Hi All!
1) I work as communications projects manager for sportscotland, based at the institute of sport in Stirling. I work with a team of 11, who are all based at sportscotland HQ in Glasgow.
…
2) Yes and Yes! Twitter has been the most successful but have been getting some tips from social media expert Annie Boyd (who you will find on Kiltr!) on how to get more successful.
3)It's good to share tips and how things have been working for you. For example... we are about to launch a social media experiment on Friday - A film about sport in Scotland. If it goes well i could share the learnings and spread the love!More
we are a translation agency in Abruzzo ,Italy
i use social media for business, i like the way this is set up in the sense that it seems to me that its a cross between linked in and FB, a bit more social than linked in and at the moment at least a lot less costly
i would obviously like to achieve more contacts that see the importance of using language to do business…
do i achieve much, well hopefully i am raising the awareness of our agency and via that awareness we will improve our contactsMore
Thanks for that link Mike, some good points made there. It is certainly a difficult task getting the entire organisation to come around to the idea of social media. A war I will continue to fight!
What do you see as the main barriers are from your perspective Paul?
I market an online greeting card service, targeting busy business professionals, and I am working on a networking book for women at the moment. I am using social media for business, and then connecting on the phone or in person. My goal is to build my business in Scotland as well as the US, and go to Glasgow next year for a much needed visit.
I've pulled together a run-down of 6 mobile/web apps that I see as essential for my day to day life. Have a wee read and let me know of any you love...
Pretty staggering folks! For me, consumers now expect your business to be available on social media.
Ooh I've definitely done this more than once. I find you get a quicker and more effective response than by the usual ways.
Depends. I've sent requests to Fender on several of their twitter accounts and not received a single reply.
You get a reply if they have actually thought about the fact that they will have to man the accounts before they launch! Amazes me how many businesses don't prepare processes, resourcing etc before opening themselves up on SM.
The bus companies across the UK are doing alot of work in this area - some of the better ones I have looked at on FB are Go Ahead North East and Nottingham City Transport
Transport is the perfect use for SM. Also check out stagecoach east scotland and oxford.
Thanks Mike - will have a look at them
I'm buying a new guitar next month and carrying out a bit of experiment by only using Social Media to help me decide on which brand and model I choose. blogging about next month.
ooh! i've also tweeted Strathclyde Police and they were very quick and helpful to respond. So public sector. Who knew? Also virgin media have always been super quick and helpful even on weekends.
I was lecturing at Edinburgh Napier yesterday and it really got me thinking about the need for students to be making a name for themselves online way before they graduate. Keen you hear your thoughts...
Completely agree. Whether it is a hobby or their area of study, however, my gut feeling tells me not enough are doing so, or haven't realised the benefits it will bring when they complete their studies and start looking for a job.
A couple of tutors etc picked up on the post and said they wished their students would take note of the tips. I don't think unis etc are impressing these on their students.
Definitely. The challenge for academics is to understand the benefits and demonstrate these to their students.
I sometimes like a wee rant on a Friday and today I have focussed on LinkedIn groups and how bad they can be...
Thought you guys may like my latest post...
Enjoyed this post from the formidale Rand Fiskin...
Really useful list of social media and digital marketing tools. Any you use that aren't on the list?
I find ifttt.com quite useful, more for my personal social media than business but I've seen some local businesses using it. Good if you don't have the time or resources to invest on a dashboard platform such as Hootsuite or Tweetdeck
Will need to take a look at that!
Thought this was s powerful portrayal of citizen journalism.
Am I being a bit harsh about Follow Friday in my latest blog post?
