Hi everyone, we have now set up a new Par Equity organisation profile where we intend to post all future Par Equity news. The use of an organisation profile rather than a group allows us to manage our Kiltr connections more effectively and provide enhanced functionality to the Par Equity connections we link with. Please feel free to connect with our new organisation profile.

The Glasshouse proved to be an excellent new venue for Par's investor events. On this occasion we had over 80 people listening to presentations from Larosco and Kiltr, who are two of our existing portfolio companies. Both of these businesses made a good show of the progress they are making in their fields. We also saw a presentation from a firm who demonstrated a new way for musicians to get their material to market. To find our more feel free to connect with me......

Looking good for 2012. After seeing 90 people at our last investor event at SG Hambros (thanks guys) at the end of February, our next venue will be the Glasshouse in Edinburgh. The location is great and the team there have been extremely helpful to deal with. Look forward to seeing our investors at the event. Its not open house. so to find out more about how to become involved with Par, feel free to contact anyone in the Par Equity team....

  • Tripping the light fantastic
AMONG the many new gadgets unveiled at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas was a pair of smartphones able to exchange data using light. These phones, as yet only prototypes from Casio, a Japanese firm, transmit digital signals by varying the intensity of the light given off from their screens. The flickering is so slight that it is imperceptible to the human eye, but the camera on another phone can detect it at a distance of up to ten metres. In an age of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, flashing lights might seem like going back to sending messages with an Aldis lamp. In fact, they are the beginning of a fast and cheap wireless-communication system that some have labelled Li-Fi.
John Dewar 3 months ago, Edinburgh, Scotland

Thanks Paul,

I read your updates with interest but rarely have the time to respond. This one though caught my eye. Is this the same Casio that make watches?
The technology fascinates me but it will need line of sight so how can it be better than WiFi or Bluetooth and how fast can it download/upload ?

John

Paul Atkinson 3 months ago, Edinburgh, Scotland

I believe it is the same Casio. I guess your question of line of site and speed depends on how a space is illuminated and how well it works with reflected as well as direct light - I know the technology has already demonstrated enough bandwidth to run a video over a short distances. This could be a really interesting technology for machine to machine communication where current methods are problematic.

Par Syndicate investment, MiiCard expands its global presence....

  • miiCard Expands Global Presence
Today, at FinovateEurope in London, will announce the global expansion of support for its ‘digital passport’ to include South Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand. The news further boosts miiCard’s already strong start to the year, which has seen a partnership with credit solutions provider Callcredit and TRUSTe Web Privacy certification. This international reach, combined with strategic partnerships, cements miiCard’s exclusive position as the only Electronic Identity and Verification (eID&V) service to anti-money laundering (AML) standard, globally.

Brilliant to see them doing well, I love the 24 / 96 kHz coming out of my squeezebox but this looks like cracking alternative. Especially as a squeezebox + mods is around the same price.

Interesting... working on a bit of research myself that is similar in approach. Will call you later in the week for a chat.

Ian Irvin 4 months ago

I don't agree with her first point about having 'all your eggs in one basket'. If an entrepreneur is not prepared to risk their all in a venture then why should an investor risk their hard earned cash to support them. It is all part of the risk reward trade off .... the less you risk then the lower will be your eventual ownership position in your own business.

One of Par's portfolio companies, MiiCard, has made a fantastic start to 2012, with the announcement of it partnership with credit solutions provider, Callcredit (www.callcredit.co.uk). Its also created some great PR on Wired magazine's website........

  • MiiCard wants to prove your identity like a digital passport (Wired UK)
Proving your trustworthiness online may be made simpler thanks to a "digital passport" called , which has teamed up to create an online identity service that aims to remove the need for paper-based checks of identity documents such as passports and driving licences.
Steven Livingstone-perez 4 months ago, Glasgow, Scotland

The financial institutions are key to this. Issue is a lot of the major financial orgs want to own the identity (we've seen how hard openid has found even account authentication in light of FB, twitter etc wanting to own the account) and they have deep pockets, but this is def an interesting area.

2011 has been a busy year, with Par Equity completing 17 investment transactions into companies with the potential for high growth within International markets. This represents another year of significant progress for Par Equity and our fellow-travellers on the journey – the Par Syndicate, the Par Advisory Panel and the Limited Partners of Par Innovation Fund I LP. We should like to take this opportunity to thank all who have been involved for your continuing support for what we are trying to achieve with Par Equity and with our portfolio companies and partnerships. We ended the year with a sprint finish and are already looking to a couple of significant investments to conclude in the first quarter of this year, so it looks as though the year in prospect will see more of the same in terms of activity levels – if not more. Our focus will remain firmly fixed on seeking out the most promising innovative young companies as well as continuing to grow our investor base of private investors, family office investors and appropriate institutions in due course. EIS tax relief of up to 50% from next April regardless of your tax rate and also capital gains tax relief. This is great news for early stage businesses in which Par invests. It's also great for raising capital for our the Par EIS Fund. Take a look at the analysis from the autumn budget statement...

  • Autumn Statement 2011: Start-ups boosted by tax reliefs for backers - Telegraph
The Chancellor said backers of start-ups will be able to qualify for 50pc income tax relief on investments of up to £100,000 in a move which experts called “an invitation to invest in innovation”.

This is surely great news for the economy, shame they couldn't make it happen a bit sooner. KILTR has EIS status and it definitely makes it a bit easier when raising finance.

Ian Irvin 5 months ago

This is certainly good news for the fund raising we have currently underway with Dukosi Ltd., and to quote the well worn Tesco phrase 'every little helps'.

John Mcneill 5 months ago, Edinburgh, Scotland

The new 50% SEIS (Seed EIS) seems to complement EIS - not sure if we know what qualifies as SEIS vs. EIS? Will this have the effect of defering potential SEIS qualified businesses from raising money until next April? Any thoughts? There's also a comment in the Statement about 'simplifying and refocusing EIS (and VCT)' - anyone know what that means??

Paul Atkinson 5 months ago, Edinburgh, Scotland

Yes, the rules around the new SEIS scheme still require further clarification. There could well be some holding back on new new investments pending this clarification, but it's not clear how this scheme will interact with existing EIS investments. Most likely it will only apply to the initial £150k raised and therefore provides no real benefit to existing portfolio companies who have already raised beyond this amount under EIS. Clearly this could be very beneficial for new investments from April onwards. I have attached a paper from PWC which provides a bit more information....More

Hugh Anderson 5 months ago

Thanks for sharing, Paul. I hadn't picked this up yesterday. It has got to be good news. I just hope the £150k limit on SEIS is incremental to any pre-existing EIS investment.

Par Innovation Fund invests in Larosco...

SOFTWARE start-up Larosco has landed its first round of external funding as it prepares to launch an updated version of its online communication service next month.

Based in Rosyth, Larosco has secured a six-figure sum from venture capitalists Par Equity, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Investment Bank. The money will be used to step up sales and marketing of its online marketing product, BongoMagic, as well as funding continued development.

Set up in 2009, Larosco currently employs about 10 people but will be adding to its workforce as it expands its sales and marketing efforts. The aim is to take BongoMagic outside the UK to a wider global audience.

Laura Sullivan, the firm’s co-founder and director, runs the business alongside her husband Dave Young – an original shareholder in the RecruitmentScotland.com job website that was sold to Monster in 2000. Immediately before setting up Larosco, Young was MD of e-commerce specialist Alcuda in Edinburgh.

BongoMagic combines a company’s existing contacts with automated viral marketing to create a targeted system for reaching an online audience. Those who receive the message can then share it with their own contacts. The firm says it is particularly useful for companies looking for potential employees.

Sullivan said BongoMagic had already attracted “substantial” interest from a number of UK-based firms recruiting in sectors such as finance, oil and gas, charity and legal services. The product has also been popular among retailers, who use the system in a similar fashion to promote special offers and new products.

“It maximises the value of a database,” Sullivan said, noting that BongoMagic also analyses buying patterns of both individuals and their wider networks.

“We can turn that one person on your database into six people.”
