I have been looking around the Royal Oak in Denny before it gets transformed. It is full of surprises as it was left much as it was when the previous owner passed on. It was a pub and inn for many many years, a three storey sandstone building. What surprised me the most was the high tech solution to the lack of fire escape : a tin can with a coiled rope in it. The instructions tell you to anchor the one end at an upstairs window and hope someone does the same at the other end. The fluffiness is meant to make it easier to grasp. But don't slide down. Climb hand over hand to safety. This served the top floor. Those escaping the first floor were simply expected to jump.
