BUILDINGS AT RISK
The official Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland (BARR) is maintained by Historic Scotland and the Royal Commission of Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS). This can be found at http://www.buildingsatrisk.org.uk/. Historic Scotland describes it : “The Buildings at Risk Register (BARR) for Scotland highlights properties of architectural or historic merit throughout the country that are considered to be at risk or under threat. To be at risk, a building does not necessarily need to be in poor condition, it may simply be standing empty with no clear future use. Many buildings at risk are in this later category”. The BARR covers officially Listed Buildings and those in designated Conservation Areas, but many of value fall outwith these categories. This discussion group is independent of both Historic Scotland and RCAHMS and is intended to highlight all buildings at risk as well as the threat to the environmental context in which they sit or even unsatisfactory intervention. Please let us know of those that concern you. At the very least, your contributions will record such buildings before they succumb. At best we would like to see them saved or better integrated into new work.
